Campus placements are as important to students as the final exams of a semester. It’s the moment students have been preparing for all these years, to get placed in a company that would start their careers. In this time period, students are going through books, the Internet, advice from seniors and teachers to know just what a company is looking for. But as a student, have you thought about if you’re looking for the right company? There are several types of companies that would visit your campus and they are looking for either a particular skill or perhaps take students in bulk. It’s better to know beforehand about which company you should be preparing for. List of Types of Companies that would visit your campus placements-
1. Core Companies
Starting off we have core companies. These companies are focused in a particular field such as Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics. They have certain requirement criteria of students from a specific field of study. For ex- Companies like Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, Maruti etc.
2. IT Companies
These companies are responsible for providing services to other companies and have a wide range of roles to fill. They are usually mass recruiters and visit more than 100 colleges in India. These companies serve foreign clients as well and are looking for students with good communications skills and personality along with an area of expertise. Most of the IT companies deal with IT and CS students. However, big companies like Infosys, L&T require students from telecom, mechanical, electrical as well.
3. Dream Companies
It is a term given to companies by the college itself. These companies have a privilege of visiting the college on the first day of placements and they can pick up the best bunch of candidates. They enjoy this privilege as they recruit students in bulk from all branches and offer a good salary. Since this is beneficial for the college as well to maintain a good placement record, these companies are preferred and are name Dream Companies. They may also have the policy to select students and not allowing them to sit for any other company if they get placed. So make sure you are sure about sitting in their interviews.
4. Product Companies
These companies are on priority among students during the placement drives. Product companies are the ones that are responsible for the sale of products to the customers. Companies such as Google, Adobe, Amazon, Flipkart etc. fall into this category. They are often looking to hire students from IT background, however, they do shortlist candidates from non-Computer Science branches like Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical. The average CTC offered is high which puts them on top in the list for placement.
5. MNCs
From product-based to service oriented, MNC’s work on a wide scale of operations. They are spread across the globe and keeps rising in scale over the years. They are looking for freshers who seek opportunity overseas, learn on the go and have a good command over a language. Companies such as Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon are some of MNCs operating in India.
6. Startups
Entrepreneurs who have started to establish themselves in the market are always looking out for new talent and a fresh perspective on things. The package may or may not be as good as a big company but the opportunity to learn and exposure unmatched. Startups such as Ola, Oyo Rooms and Zomato have shown amazing growth over the years in India.
7. Non-Tech Companies
Companies dealing with analytics, support, financial operations, compliance and legal, marketing or business development fall under this category. These companies may be out of your domain, but offer a great learning experience and an exciting salary package to entice students.
