WHAT ARE THE CORE ENGINEERING BRANCHES

Engineering has been one of the most popular courses in India in the past decade. It offers a number of exciting career options and opportunities. A science student can decide to pursue one of the various fields of engineering according to their interests. There are core engineering branches and other branches of engineering from which a student can choose. Most of the core engineering subjects are offered by engineering colleges and other subjects are offered at colleges specializing in those particular subjects. Engineering courses are 4 years long. There are 2 semesters each year lasting for a period of 6 months. To select the right branch according to their interest, students must know about the various branches of engineering.

Here is a list of core engineering branches and some other popular branches of engineering-

  1. 1. Mechanical Engineering

It deals with machines design, construction and operation. A student can learn about the basic understanding and knowledge of how machines and tools work. A student can also acquire knowledge about designing of automobiles, aircraft, electric motors, and other heavyweight vehicles. Mechanical engineering in India is quite a lucrative career and has opportunities in multiple industries. A student can pursue B.Tech and M.Tech degree from various reputed colleges in India based on entrance exams after completing 10+2 in Science with Maths.

  1. 2. Electrical Engineering

An electrical engineer works with electrical systems, from design and development to testing equipment. Some core subjects of study are physics, mathematics, electricity, electromagnetism and electronics. The career opportunities are somewhat limited to Government jobs. However, there has been a boom in the solar-powered product industry and there is a requirement of electric engineers in the private sector.

  1. 3. Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the widest and oldest form of engineering dealing with the planning, designing, constructing and maintaining infrastructures. It includes building bridges, highways, schools, airports, hospitals, sewage etc. Civil Engineering has a great scope in India as well since there is always new development in a developing nation. Construction of metro lines itself has been a huge source for creating new jobs.

Why these are called Core Branches of Engineering?

There are a number of engineering branches now but it all started with these 3 core branches and later got divided into sub-branches. As technology grew, there were specific areas in the core branches that require separate study and hence they were separated as a sub-branch. Some of these sub-branches include Computer Science, IT, Petroleum, Electronics and Communication, Chemical, Aerospace, Agricultural, Plastic Engineering etc. Read our next article to know more about the sub-branches of engineering that are popular in India.
